" Theatre of the Nations, Zurich, 1998 "

 In 1998 Switzerland is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Swiss Federal Constitution which in 1848 laid down the principles of human rights, democracy and multiculturalism in the country. 
 
In order to commemorate this event and celebrate this anniversary, the festival of the "THEATRE OF THE NATIONS - ZURICH 1998" took place from 27 June to 20 July 1998 in the framework of the Festival of Zurich. 

 Held since 1957 under the auspices of the International Theatre Institute (ITI), NGO in formal associate relations with UNESCO,  the " Theatre of the Nations "  (click here for background information) was  held in Switzerland for the first time, organized in collaboration with the Swiss Centre of the ITI. 
 
The main aim of this festival is to present a selection of the best productions from different regions of the world and to bring together theatre professionals from different cultural contexts. 

The morning of Sunday 12 July was devoted to a celebration of the

50th Anniversary of ITI

  held at the Schauspielhaus, Zurich and organised by the Swiss Centre of the ITI.

FRANCE (in French):" Histoire de Marie " - Pierre Brassaï and the Bouffes du Nord. 

NETHERLANDS (in Dutch) " Een soort Hades " - Norén by Toneelroep Amsterdam. Direction: Gerardjans Rijinder. 

INDIA (in Hindi dialect) : " Chakravyuha " & " Uttarpriyadarshi " by Ratan Thiyam. Presented by the Chorus Repertory Theatre Imphal, Manipur.- 

ISRAEL : Choreography - Dance by the Company Liat Dror Nir Ben Gal - Theatre of Dance Israel. 

JAPAN : " NOH Theatre " - Koichi Okada - Groupe Bai-Yu-Kai im of the Rim-Nô-Ji Temple, Nikko. 

KOREA REP. OF  (in Korean) :" Sikkim for the Living " by the Cecil Theatre Company. 

LITHUANIA (in Lithuanian) :" Masquerade " by Michael Lermontov presented by the Vilnius mazasis teatras - 

POLAND (in Polish) " Immanuel Kant " by Thomas Bernhard performed by the Polski Teatr Wroclaw. Director : Kristian Lupa. 

RUSSIA (in Russian) : " Crime and Punishment " (Dostoievski/ Danill Ginkas). Director: Kama Ginkas. 

SWITZERLAND - FRANCE (in French) :" Phèdre " - Racine - Director : Luc Bondy - Theatre of Vidy-Lausanne. 

SWITZERLAND " Révolution mit Hund " : Directed by Tim Krohn, Shauspielakademie Zürich 
" Ohn end Falala " A collective creation - Tanztheater Dritter Frûhling, direction : Roger Nydegger. 
" Mariel " by Suzanne van Lohuizen presented by the Junges Theater of Zurich. 
" Die Verborgenen 1848 " - Vaudeville Theater Zürich. 

An Academy of the "Theatre of Nations, Zurich 1998"
- workshops for young performing artists was also organized in conjunction with this event.
