Most of this festival’s events were held at the Kiev State Theatre

The festival program included 13 performances from 10 countries, with
the support of "Pro Helvetia" as a regional project : Albania,
Bulgaria, Macedonia were widely represented for the first time at this
very successful Festival.
Well-known Albanian actor Dhimiter Orgocka performed "Amok" , by Stefan
Zweig , for which he was awarded for the best male role ; famous

forefront of their professon in their own countries.

Khazanov (Russia), President of International Forum One Man Show
ITI/UNESCO, Secretary General of Russian Centre of ITI, Director of

arts, professor of S.-Petersburg Theatre Academy.
This year’s festival was generously supported by the Ukrainian
government and state as
well as by many Kiev institutions.
The participants and guests of festival (directors of European
festivals, journalists, critics), had the possibility not only to watch
and to discuss performances but to visit museums, exhibitions, and to
engage in sightseeing all around Kiev. There were also very interesting
"round-table" dicussions of theatre critics and practitioners of
mono-theatre in the Academy of Arts of Ukraine on "Mono-theatre -
development, difficulties and problems", a press-conference and a
meeting of directors of mono-festivals. The events of the Festival
attracted a lot of attention from the public, from theatre
professionals and from mass-media.

V"THESPIS" MONODRAMA
FESTIVAL
(KIEL, Germany, 10-17 November 2006)
After eight days packed with 16 different
solo productions from Australia, Japan, Italy, Marocco, Israel, Poland,
Russia, Turkmenistan, Armenia, Great Britain, the Ukraine, South Africa
and Germany, the 5th THESPIS festival ended on November 17, 2006.
The festival programme presented unique insights into theatre
traditions from the most different countries and cultures, mostly for
the first time on a German stage.
On November 17, 2006, 10:30 p.m., the prize winning actresses and
actors of the 5th International Monodrama Festival THESPIS where
announced by the international jury (Valery Khasanov/Russia - Chairman,
Renate Klett/Germany, Cersten Gerecht/Germany, Abel Solares/Guatemala):
The main award for an extraordinary artistic achievement (donated by
Kieler Nachrichten) was divided into three equal parts and went to:
Nozomi Satomi (WHO AM I?/Japan), Yftach Klein (HIGH NOON/Israel) and
Pip Utton (BACON/Great Britain).
The special award (donated by Maecenas e.V.) was divided into three
equal parts and went to: Lidiya Danylchuk (DREAM/the Ukraine), for
transforming poetry into theatre and voice into dance, to Latefa
Ahrrare (THE LAST NIGHT/Marocco), for her courageous approach of a
social taboo, and to Anna Mele (LEAR/Turkmenistan), for creating a one
man show based on the traditions of oriental theatre out of a classic
play.
The attendant festival directors (Valery Khasanov/Russia, Hakob
Ghazanchyan/Armenia, Mohammad Al Afkham/United Arab Emirates, Antonina
Mikhaltsova/Belarus, Jolanta Sutowicz/Germany) awarded their special
prize to: Julian Swift-Speed (FOOTSTEPS/Poland).
The festival organizers’ special award went to: Armine Matzakyan (FROM
ME TO ME/Armenia).
The media award (donated by Offener Kanal Kiel) went to: Nazomi Satomi
(WHO AM I?/Japan).
One week earlier, on November 10, 2006, the festival had been opened by
the Europe-widely acclaimed German actress Angela Winkler with her solo
performance I CANNOT SAY I LOVE YOU (not in contest) in the sold out
Schauspielhaus of Kiel and in the presence of representatives of
culture and politics. Generally, the festival’s reception by the
audience was clearly higher than in the past. Many events were sold
out, the press coverage was enhanced.
The supporting programme - e.g. symposia and a workshop (Kieler
Nachrichten, KulturForum) - were successful, too.
As in the past, the encounter of the actresses and actors of this
year’s festival caused new creative impulses which hopefully will
become viewable on the world’s theatre stages in the near future.
The presence of such prominent artists like Angela Winkler, the Polish
Beckett actress Irena Jun and the highly acclaimed Israeli-Arabian
actor and director Mohammad Bakri affirms the international reputation
of THESPIS.
We are very happy about the great cooperation with our partners:
Jennifer Walpole, Secretary General of ITI/UNESCO, came from Paris and
spoke to the audience at the opening night, the cooperation with peace
of art added a very interesting special programme with discussion and
music to the performances from Israel, and the moving monodrama
FOOOTSTEPS in the Flandernbunker (in cooperation with Verein Mahnmal
Kilian e.V.) aroused much public interest.
