!The 31st ITI World Congress was held  in the Philippines from  22-29 May 2006

The International Theatre Institute (ITI), an international non-governmental organization (NGO) was founded in Prague in 1948 by UNESCO and the international theatre community. The ITI has national centres in around 90 countries. The ITI maintains formal associate relations with UNESCO and is its principal international NGO partner in the field of the live performing arts. ITI has a cooperation  and information sharing agreement with  UNESCO,  and receives support for certain international projects from the  UNESCO Culture Sector's Division of Arts and Cultural Enterprise.
The ITI General Secretariat is based at UNESCO House in Paris. 
 

OBJECTIVES :

  • To promote international exchange of knowledge and practice in the domain of the performing arts. 
  • To stimulate creation and increase cooperation among theatre people. 
  • To increase public awareness of the need to take artistic creation into consideration in the domain of Development 
  • To deepen mutual understanding and contribute to the consolidation of peace and friendship between peoples. 
  • To join in the defence of the ideals and aims of UNESCO. 
  • To combat all forms of racism or social and political discrimination. 

MEMBERSHIP : 

ITI now includes approximately 90 national and associate ITI Centres which form the basis of the Institute's membership. An ITI Centre is made up of professionals active in the theatre life of the country and representative of all branches of the performing arts. Its activities are conducted both on a national and international level.  In recent years, provision has been made for both national and international organizations to become members of  ITI . Individuals become members of ITI by joining their National Centre

ITI also has a Committee of Honour. 

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE :

The governing body of the Institute is constituted by a Congress of members assembled in plenary session. Between Congresses the Institute is run by an Executive Council composed of 20 elected members and by an elected Secretary General based at the ITI General Secretariat at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. 

ITI Regional Bodies have been set up to coordinate ITI activities in their respective regions : 

A Documentation Centre and Archive Centre for Asia is being set up at the Bangladesh ITI Centre. 

An Interregional Liaison Bureau is based at the Tunisian ITI Centre. 

There are also 2 permanent bases of the Albert Botbol - University of the Theatre of Nations (AB-UTN) one in Tunisia and the other in Venezuela. 

In 1998 an UNESCO-ITI Chair  "Theatre and Culture of Civilisations" was set up in Bucharest (Romania) 

ITI Committees
ITI also has 8 international sub-committees or project groups, each with their programme of activities. These bodies work in various specialized areas of the performing arts : Some have their own pages or websites.

REGULAR ITI INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES :

ITI contributes to fulfilling its own and UNESCO's goals through its various activities. These include colloquiums, conferences, workshops, training courses as well as publications and the diffusion of international information concerning theatre. The most important recurrent ITI events are :

    UCHIMURA PRIZE :

    The International Theatre Institute, in collaboration with its Japanese Centre, awards the annual UCHIMURA PRIZE in recognition of a work or activity bearing a relationship to Japanese theatre.

    ITI and UNESCO:

    ITI is UNESCO's principal NGO partner in the field of the live performing arts. From 1962 ITI had relations of consultation and association with UNESCO, being among its A - Category Non Governmental Organizations. In June 1996 ITI obtained a new status, being one of a limited number of major NGOS admitted to formal associate relations with UNESCO.. 
    ITI has a cooperation  and information sharing agreement with  UNESCO,  and receives support for certain international projects from the  UNESCO Culture Sector's Division of Arts and Cultural Enterprise..

    ITI also has observer status with ECOSOC (UNO) and the Council of Europe. It participates in the work of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the UNESCO International Education Bureau.
