1 – 7 October 2000
021 ATHENS (Greece) 5th International Women Playwrights’ Conference.
The Conference will be organized in Athens in collaboration with the Hellenic Centre of ITI. Women Playwrights International (WPI) «The idea of an organization for women playwrights and women in the Theatre started in the USA. Women of the theatre (Scholars, directors, playwrights etc.) invited women colleagues from all over the world to Buffalo, N.Y. in 1998, for a First international Conference of Women playwrights. Over 400 women of all nationalities, colours, ages and competences met there and felt proud of working for the theatre, and happy to be among colleagues. There were performances and rehearsed readings, panels and, caucus discussions and personal contacts often resulting in co-operation and friendships.
 The 2nd International Conference of Women Playwrights took place in Toronto (Canada), in 1991, the third was in Adelaide, (Australia) in 1994 . The Conference in Australia was a huge success. Now there were about 500 women, playwrights and other theatre practitioners from literally every continent. Many met their « displaced » playwright compatriots of 1st, 2nd or even 3rd generation. We were all spurred to write more, to do more. And we felt this had to become more than a triennial encounter. We started discussing creating an organization with a constitution. During the 4th Conference which was held in Galway (Ireland) in 1997, the international Committee elected Aliki Halls to coordinate the work for the establishment of the new Women Playwrights Organization.  Two preparatory meetings were organized in Athens in 1998 and 1999 respectively. The organization is now endowed with a constitution and an interim management committee consisting of a President (U.S.A.), a Vice-President (Australia), a Secretary General (Greece) and a Treasurer (Puerto Rico).
The country to host the 5th Conference is Greece. The organizers are the Hellenic Centre of the International Theatre Institute/UNESCO, the University of Athens and other public institutions under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Culture. The Organizing Committee, made up of eminent theatre women has been working hard to make the 5th Conference (1 - 7 October 2000) a success. Three hundred plays have been received and 80 have been selected for the different Conference activities by the selection committee headed by Dr Lia Karavia.  The 5th Conference is to take place on the premises of Athens University (Zografou) and in other halls and theatres of Athens. The last two days will be spent in Delphi, at the Conference Centre there. The Conference will include round table discussions, debates, workshops, rehearsed readings and performances. Other countries will certainly offer to host future conferences. already there are hopes and plans that Mexico will host the 6th WPI Conference in the year 2003  » Aliki Halls (President of the Hellenic Centre of ITI).

024 YAOUNDE (Cameroun). A Regional Meeting of African ITI National Centres    Extracts from the Declaration of Directors of African Centres of the International Theatre Institute: « Taking the Theatre in Hand »
« The Directors of African Centres of ITI/UNESCO took advantage of the 8th édition of the Cameroun International Theatre Festival (RETIC)  festival organized by their colleague Ambroise M’Bia, to meet a second time.
Their first meeting was held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, in October 1996. After West Africa it was Central Africa’s turn to host this meeting, important for theatre life in Africa.  ... »
The agenda included :

  •  the restructuration of the Regional Bureau;
  •  policy of communication between the Centres of the continent;
  •  the festivals;
  •  education and training;
  •  the circulation of plays and productions ;
  • problems related to theatrical creation.
« Each of the items was closely examined by the approximately 20 delegations present. Proposals were made which should allow the African Centres to become more dynamic in the coming months.
It was proposed that in the interests of efficiency, the two-headed nature of the Regional Bureau no longer be kept.
Communication
One serious problem confronting theatre people in Africa is the lack of communication. Measures were proposed to find an effective solution to this situation ; the setting up of regional antennas of the Regional Office and of a liaison newsletter, equipment for the Regional Office and antennas on Internet etc.
Circulation of productions
The policy of festivals reinforces that of the circulation of productions.  Numerous obstacles of various kinds – financial, administrative and other prevent the circulation of plays.  While engaging in a campaign to make the relevant authorities aware of this situation and to encourage them to take appropriate action, the directors of Centres plan also to elect one or two festivals in each region to act as relays for the diffusion of productions and information on the life of the Centres.
Artistic Education and training
Education and training are also essential aspects of theatre life in Africa. The directors of the Centres decided to give these the importance they deserve : each festival must plan to include a training session, either of an artistic or technical sort (sound and lighting).
The Centres cannot invest directly in the process of creation but can facilitate the diffusion of productions through the festival circuit.
The above were the main conclusions of this meeting which demonstrated the determination of the Africans to take their theatre in hand.
The Yaoundé meeting showed once more the efficacity and the importance of the ITI network in Africa. »

The meeting, chaired by Jean-Pierre Guingané, President of the ITI African Regional Bureau and Ambroise M’Bia, President of the Cameroun Centre of ITI, brought together representatives from the following countries : Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Centrafrica, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Ghana, Nigeria, Rep.   •  Funding projects ;
  •  The 28th ITI World Congress ;
  •  Role of theatre in building a Culture of Peace :
  •  ITI and artistic education..
The meeting, chaired by Riitta Seppälä, took several important decisions especially concerning the need to put in place an informal regional form of coordination for the European ITI Centres. The task of coordinator was temporarily accepted by the German Centre and it was decided to examine the possibilities of finding funding which would enable the creation of a position of coordinator.   Martin Roeder-Zerndt, Director of the German Centre agreed to draw up a document for circulation to European Centres so that the discussion on the possible role and functions of a coordinator could continue after the meeting, through the use of an electronic mailing list.
The participants examined a number of questions related to theatre and a culture of peace and were informed of the work and publications of UNESCO in this field.   They sent a collective message of solidarity to the Colombian Centre, organizer of the Forum of Artists for Peace, that was to be held in Santa Marta in December 1999.  Attention was also drawn to the importance of artistic education and the implications of the ITI/UNESCO Chair, its activities and the 4 resolutions adopted in Sinaia (July 1999).
The evolution of the application of new technologies within ITI was presented by Jakub Sosnowski and it was unanimously decided to give priority to the development of the system of communication between all the ITI Centres especially through the setting up of electronic Mailing Lists. Furthermore, a training session was held for Centres that wished to take charge of filling in their own data for the World Theatre Directory on Internet.
Jacques Téphany, in charge of organization of the 28th ITI Congress, (Marseilles, 14 – 21 May 2000) provided information on the Congress draft programme and gave practical details.
A report of the meeting was drawn up by Ann Mari Engel, Director of the Swedish Centre and sent to all European Centres. *Message of Solidarity from AFRICA to the
World Forum of  «Artists for a Culture of Peace»

Santa Marta – Colombia

Jean-Pierre Guingané
Vice President of ITI,
President of the ITI Regional Bureau for AFRICA

« Dear Artist friends,

From all regions of Africa, the eyes and the hearts of all the artists in the African National Centres of the International Theatre Institute, are focused on Santa Marta where your torches, burning together, trace the path of Hope for a new millenium of Peace.
The world needs peace because the world belongs to human beings and because man is supposed to be intelligent. The world needs peace so that our creations will no longer be cries of pain and hatred.

As this century draws to a close, who better than Africans can appreciate the symbolic importance of this forum ? Africa aspires to peace because it is dying of war and because it wants to live. Today Congolese artists can be found everywhere except at home; the artists of Rwanda that escaped the genocide, are filled with terror at the thought of returning to their country ; the Algerian artists no longer have a voice to mourn their colleagues ...

The artists of Sierra Leone have had their left arm amputated - their right arm amputated  -  many find themselves with both arms cut off without understanding why it is their lot to live in a world of such madness.

The litany could go on ten times longer because there are also those, completely de-humanized, who are lost in the thick forest  And then, there are those, their faces contorted in a perpetual grin, who wander deserted streets laughing uncontrollably,– deprived of their reason by the violence they have known.

And what can one say of the orphans, the widows, of all those who have had an irreplacable being torn from them by war.

Since Africa, like the rest of humanity at this time is paying a heavy debt to war and violence, we are standing up all together to demand Peace in the World.

But to whom should we address our complaint ? To each person, for each one of us is partially responsible for the world’s present situation.  In the deepest recesses of our hearts let us make the resolution to leave a better world to future generations.  . »
