A new venue, the recently opened Kwang Lim Seminar House, Pochun, was chosen to replace the original choice of the Batanggol Arts Centre, Yangpyong. POCHUN, a town of green groves and forest an hour to the north of Seoul, provided an ideal environment for the session and participants benefited from an atmosphere of serenity and a special sense of togetherness.

A total of 22 young professionals from 14 countries participated, thus making altogether 52 participants, including 30 Korean. The organizers were able to provide only 1 participant from Bangladesh with the round-trip airfare and the other 21 participants came at their own expense. The organizers expressed their appreciation of their willingness to participate, in spite of great financial difficulty, the requested UNESCO grant not having been received.

The 52 participants worked throughout the two-week program divided into 4 individual classes, led by 4 workshop directors each with a specific goal to achieve with their respective groups. Although the daily schedule included 6 hours divided into two 3 hour sessions (09:00-12:00 & 14:00-17:00), the exceptionally high level of the participants' enthusiasm often led them to work extended hours late into the night. In some early evening hours after dinner, there was an opportunity to view videotaped programs of a number of representative Asian productions and to follow these up with interesting discussion.

In between their tight workshop schedules, particpants had special opportunities to visit the city of Seoul and attend a number of theatre performances. Traditional Korean performances including a special Samul-nori performance and the traditional puppet drama called the Kkokdukakshi Norum done by the Michoo Theatre Company (Artistic Director Mr Jin Chaek SOHN) enjoyed an enthusiastic reception. Halfway through the workshop, the participants themselves organized a night of spectacular events, in which each of them presented his or her special talent.

The finale of this workshop, the  presentation of each group's work, took place in the auditorium of the Kwang Lim Seminar House on 28th June. Many honoured guests, including the President of the Organizing Committee, Minister Won-yong Kang, Jeong Ok Kim, President of ITI Worldwide, and others, were present to congratulate the participants on their successful completion of the workshop. In the closing ceremony which followed, the ITI Korean Centre presented the A.B.-UTN Certificate to the participants and a Letter of Appreciation to the workshop directors. In celebration of an genuine encounter filled with inspiration and a special sense of accomplishment, this 1997 edition of the A.B.- UTN ended with a farewell party.
