Mission Statement
The Music Theatre Committee of ITI is committed to the artistic development of music theatre worldwide. From experimental projects to productions in opera houses, the committee embraces all forms of music theatre including hybrid theatrical forms where music is a crucial and indispensable aspect in the performance. The committee takes a special interest in music theatre outside of the Western European tradition and in contemporary work which reflects these other traditions.

The MTC is a democratic body, in which the ideals of UNESCO concerning the acknowledgment of cultural diversity and exchange of ideas end knowledge between people and nations are highly esteemed.

The committee's main task is dissemination of information and audience education with the goal of raising audience awareness of music theatre around the globe. Through its ever-expanding network, the MTC seeks to facilitate the production and presentation of music theatre, and the organization of cooperation and exchange of productions among producers.

Committee members are ITI members whose professional work is directly related to the creation, production or presentation of music theatre. The group includes directors, composers, dramaturges and producers of opera and music theatre from all over the world.

New members can be asked to join but local organizations and individuals who work in the field of music theatre can also take the initiative to become a member of the committee.

Report
At the congress in Xiamen the MTC became enlarged by a substantial number of new members from the People’s Republic of China. It was decided, that its main correspondence be from now on bilingual (English and Chinese). Nick Yu has offered to translate.

The new board of MTC, that was voted on in Xiamen, met on November 29 en 30 in Munich and voted Nico Schaafsma to be president for this period. The other responsibilities within the board will be shared by the board members.
It was also decided to no longer make a distinction between active and corresponding members. When a committee member takes on a task, he or she will be more involved in the committee’s work and in that way more directly connected to the board.

The MTC will organize two meetings in 2012, one in St. Petersburg and one in Nanjing.

The MTC’s activity will concentrate on ‘Music Theatre NOW’. Organized in cooperation with ITI Germany, ‘Music Theatre NOW’ consists of three elements: an international competition for the best music theatre productions of the past years, a meeting where winning productions are shown on video and discussed. It also involves the creation of an ‘International Web Archive of New Music Theatre’.
The competition knows many rewards and has an additional prize of an invitation to perform live at the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre.
‘Music Theatre Now’ was first held in 2008 at Radialsytem V in Berlin, where 18 productions were presented.
The next edition will take place 22-26 May 2013. The meeting will be hosted by The Swedish Biennial for Performing Arts in Jönköping, Sweden.
Laura Berman is coordinator/director of the meeting and the competition. Jury-member Roland Quitt is responsible for the archive.
