Theatre for Development

For over sixty years, the network of the International Theatre Institute ITI has been using the performing arts to nurture dialogue between cultures, instil self-confidence in youth, empower women, minority groups and entire communities, and to attain overall social cohesion.

ITI centres, groups and committees all over the world develop performing arts projects with a clear social agenda: to increase gender equality (Africa, Middle East), to preserve endangered cultural heritage and the environment (project with the Mayan community in Mexico), to develop local economies through festivals (Africa, Latin America, Asia and worldwide) and to use theatre for peace building in conflict zones (e.g. Centre for Theatre in Conflict Zones, Khartoum, Sudan).
