At the heart of the International
Theatre Institute's mandate is the idea of communication between theatre
professionals. The effective realization of this international communication
responsibility is the mission given to the ITI's Communication Committee
when it was first conceived in 1979. That year, a Study Committee
was formed, with two branches, one focussing on theatre training
and the other on the problems of international theatre communication
and publication. In 1985 two separate committees, the Theatre Training
Committee and the Publication Committee were established. The
latter, 1987 subsequently renamed the Communication Committee,
consists of editors of international theatre journals and magazines, theatre
book publishers and theatre information specialists such as dramaturges
and publicists. It has held a number of seminars in different parts of
the world aimed at identifying needs in the field of theatre publishing
and improving the exchange of information among theatre professionals. The Communication Committee is also responsible for the biennial international theatre yearbook, The World of Theatre, with articles on the most recent theatre seasons in over 50 countries and a chronological list of all ITI activities between its world congresses.
