Recent Theatre History USA updated Sat Oct 15 01:48:57 2005 |
The theatre culture of the United States draws from the same complicated and diverse background as the rest of our society. Theatre activity is divided into several quite distinct parts. Broadway theatre - the large commercial theatre producers - holds a central place in our theatre history and has the widest international reputation. In the past, Broadway was where all the major American playwrights were produced, and it is the cradle and home of American musical theatre. During the last forty years, there has been an explosion of theatres all across the country. Called regional or resident theatres, there are approximately 1,200 nonprofit theatres that present seasons of plays either one after the other or in repertory. The development of these theatres has created a strong decentralizing force. Where Broadway used to be the creative center of our theatre, the regional theatres have become the most important centers for theatre development. In New York, there are also the Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway theatres. The off-Broadway theatres, started as an alternative to Broadway, once offered the opportunity to produce plays for a fraction of the cost of a Broadway production. Some years later, as off-Broadway prices rose, it was necessary to create Off-Off Broadway - in even smaller spaces and at smaller prices. The Off-Off Broadway movement brought about the experimental companies that flourished in the '60s and '70s. But here again experimental theatre has pushed aside geographic boundaries and flourishes or languishes all across the country. Educational theatre in the U.S., comprised of professional theatres within universities, student theatres, and college and university drama departments is a colossal undertaking. In fact, by teaching theatre, colleges and universities become the first institutions to promote national theatre and to lay the groundwork for the regional theatres that exist everywhere today. Finally, there are the many small commercial theatre enterprises: summer theatres, stock companies, and dinner theatres that present popular plays and musicals, often in resort and vacation communities and in suburban neighborhoods. American theatres represents a wide range of aesthetic styles, serve and spring from diverse communities, embrace divergent missions, and together are responsible for thrilling, vibrant theatrical work. |
