Histoire récente du Théâtre
Recent Theatre History
SWEDEN updated Sat Oct 15 01:48:57 2005

In Sweden there are more than 200 professional theatres and theatre groups, most of which receive subsidies from the government and the local authorities.

Our theatre tradition dates back to the 16th century, but continuos theatre activities were not achieved until the establishment of the Royal stages during the era of the king Gustav III at the end of the 18th century. At that time especially opera and dance experienced a golden age. The dramatic theatre was established according to a French pattern but had the promotion of Swedish language and literature as its purpose. The two royal stages are today national theatres: the Royal Opera performs music theatre and ballet and the Royal Dramatic theatre performs spoken drama on six stages, housing many of the well-known Swedish actors and directors.

During the nineteenth century, theatre was mainly performed by many travelling companies. At the turn of the century, the economic boom brought about by industrialisation made it possible to build several new theatre buildings all over the country and the expansion of the railway system brought travelling theatre companies to all parts of the country. In Stockholm, a number of private theatre were established.

There were also a wide range of stages for popular entertainment and a growing ”people's theatre” movement. There were also many amateur theatres, spreading theatre to a wider range of audience.

In the 1930's the social democratic government initiated the establishment of a nation-wide organisation for touring theatre, the Riksteatern. The Riksteatern is the third theatre financed by government funds, has today 225 local audience associations and produces 1500 performances a year of drama, music theatre and dance. It has a special department for producing children's theatre, Unga riks. The well known dance company Cullbergbaletten also belongs to Riksteatern.

During the 20's and 30's the first municipally supported theatres were founded,
in Gothenburg and Helsingborg. With a continuos growth during the following decades there are 35 subsidised regional and local theatres. They vary in size from six to four hundred employees, covering the country from north to south. They are supported by local, municipal and county local authorities, as well as by the state. The produce plays, musicals, operas and most of them provide a high proportion of theatre for children and young audiences.

The Royal Opera is the major lyric theatre but there are also opera companies/music theatres in Gothenburg, Malmoe, Umeå (Norrlandsoperan), Karlstad as well as the Folkopera in Stockholm and several independent companies without premanent troupes. Some of them have dance companies, like the Royal Ballet, the Gothenburg Ballet and the Cullberg Ballet at the Riksteatern. There are regional dance companies in Malmoe and in Häsrnösand and in Stockholm the House of Dance is a guest performance venue for national and international dance companies.

During the 1960's the theatre became an import moulder of public opinion and a number of independent theatre groups were formed.Their way of working, choosing repertory and contact with the audience differed in many ways form the institutions, even if many of the smaller regional theatres worked in similar way.

There are also some twenty independent dance groups, which in the last decade have been advancing strongly. Among the more interesting independent choreographers are Margareta Åsberg, Efva Lilja, Kenneth Kvarnström, Cristina Caprioli and Jens Östberg.
The House of Dance, opened in 1991 in Stockholm, presents and co-produces productions by Swedish and overseas companies, and arranges seminars, film and video shows, workshops and seminars.

As in other European countries, Swedish theatre has during the 20:th century been dominated by the directors. Some well known names are Ingmar Bergman, Lennart Hjulström Suzanne Osten, Peter Oskarson, Lars Rudolfsson and Staffan Valdemar Holm.

From the theatre´s repertory, taken all together, about 50 percent consist of Swedish drama. Among playwrights dominates August Strindberg and ,among the contemporary, Lars Norén. Per-Olof Enquist, Agneta Pleijel and others have also reached outside the borders of Sweden. A especially interesting tradition has grown within drama for children and youth. Most of the regional theatres, many of the groups and some private theatres regularly give performances for children and youth and reach their audience in most cases through school performances.

The last decade has been distinguished by performances of boundary crossing character, where especially the younger groups mix theatre, dance, mime, film and other media.

Swedish theatre in our century has been manifold and easy available and these remain the main characteristics: both of them a result of a consciously implemented cultural policy. There has been strong public support for theatre. In teh las decade there has been a shift in the employment positions towards more and more freelancers. There are also new employment forms like 3-5 year contracts and the TeaterAlliansen, an institution for giving basic social security and training programmes for freelancers
