Recent Theatre History PHILIPPINES updated Tue Oct 8 21:31:21 2002 |
There are 3 theater groups in the country that have maintained its regularly season of plays : the Repertory Philippines that performs Broadway plays (since the 60's), Tanghalang Pilipino (1987) that produces original Filipino plays and foreign classics translated into the Filipino language. Dulaang UP that produces serious foreign plays in English and in Filipino translation with one original Filipino work thrown in to complete the season. The Philippine Educational Theater Association (founded by Cecile Guidote and now run independently by young theater artists) which started as the first theater company in the Philippines to produce original Filipino works in all its seasons has, of late, not been able to sustain its yearly theatrical season. Since its inception, ITIPhilippines has been consistent in its support for theater for the poor, the marginalized and for the special children. With 1/3 of the population living below the poverty line, it is continuing its priority programs in providing Theater training for special children and out of school youth through linkages with community, civic, religious, school groups and the government to demonstrate the power of Theater for human resource development, rehabilitation, and education. The Center has the distinction of producing and sustaining a national Broadcast Theater Program that reach out to the masses for their entertainment and enlightenment. Balintataw was recently featured in CNN and introduced by Jane Fonda as a model soap opera for change. The Philippine ITI Center also supports efforts in the development of playwrights, the key to a dynamic and provocative Theater. It has helped the country chapter of the Women Playwrights International in its search for gifted, budding writers among the Muslim and Indigenous communities in Mindanao for its Playwriting Workshops. The Center also plays a leading role in promoting a Culture of Peace, Social Justice and Sustainable Development by giving mobile workshops in the provinces for marginalized communities. It is cooperating with the local government of Bohol and the Bohol-Foreign Friendship Foundation to give an environmental theme for the International Arts Festival this July 2002. For the World Environment Month in Boracay, a world famous beach, the Center has organized a gallery of the sea of paintings on 50 sailboats and water festival of plays, music, and dance. |
