CONTEMPORARY JAPANESE THEATRE The most significant feature of Japanese theatre lies in the fact that it has seen for the past 75 years the fundamental division of "Commercial theatre" and "Shingeki theatre" (Western-style theatre in modern Japan). This division of theatre partly derives from the facts that "Shingeki theatre" started about 90 years ago as a non-profit arts organization which then put 2 to 3 days of performances, while "Commercial theatre" still observes the traditional system of performance that originated in Edo period when each theatre made one-year contracts with actors in November to put on 6 performances per year which later in Meiji period slightly changed into monthly performances. Strange as it may sound that both the National Theatre and New National Theatre fall into the category of "Commercial theatre," we must know that they do so because they adopt the performance system of "Commercial theatre." On the other hand, "Shingeki theatre," whether they are operating as theatre groups or production companies, usually put on 10 days to 2 weeks of performances in major cities such as Tokyo and Osaka, after which they transfer the productions as repertoirs to regional theatres for the duration of about 2 to 3 months. The Japanese little theatres, which started about 30 years ago, has not yet fixed system but usually put on their performances in small theatres of about 100 to 200 seats. Exception from these categories would be a few theatre companies including "Shiki" who runs 6 theatres in major cities of Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka and SapporoÅ@with long-run performances mainly of musical productions. Among the traditional theatres, "Nogaku" makes it a basic rule to perform on 1 day basis. "Bunraku," Japanese puppet theatre, runs 9 months performances in the National Theatres of Osaka and Tokyo, but unlike Kabuki, there is only 1 group of performers for "Bunraku." Theatres categorized as "Commercial theatres" organize "Japan Theatre Promotors Association," and the companies categorized as "Shingeki theatre" organize "Association of Japanese Thetre Companies" National Theatre and New National Theatre are members of neither organizations. It goes without saying that National Theatre and New National Theatre are naturally rewarded with generous grants from the state in terms of their expenditures. On the other hand, the "Shingeki theatres" just started to receive grants in recent years, which still remain far less than those in the cases of American and European organizations who often receive grants from the states and local governments.
