Recent Theatre History IRAN updated Sat Dec 18 19:52:53 2004 |
Iranian theatre has a history of traditional and ritualistic plays originating in both Islamic ceremonies and folk culture, with an oral performance-oriented nature. The country was introduced to Western-style dramatic forms about one hundred years ago through a number of translated plays, and our theatre has seen many changes in its structure and practice since then. Previously, theatrical activities were sporadic and occasional. However, in recent years, the staging of plays has become a regular medium of performing arts, and a new wave of enthusiasm is observed in almost all fields of art and culture. The theatre has become more varied in its styles of expression. Some are socially minded, and some maintain a traditional style, and some try to keep up with contemporary theatrical theories and performances. Our theatre is primarily a ‘director's theatre'. It is firmly based on the dramatic text. Though a less text-oriented genre has appeared recently on Iranian stage by younger artists. Some youth are producing interesting experimental plays on small stages, and their ambitions and artistic endeavours aim at creating an ensemble spirit. This new generation of actors and directors is certainly arriving with fresh visions of their own. In the last 35 years, graduates from theatre schools and colleges have attempted to promote theatre in Iran. Universities have become the fundamental institutions to promote national theatre, and some plays are performed under female direction. A lot of adapted or translated plays by playwrights like Albee, Brecht, Anouilh, Ibsen, Strindberg, Beckett, and Shakespeare are performed with alacrity as are plays originally written in Persian. Alongside urban theatre, a tradition of folk theatre is still present in the rural areas, rendering thin performances usually in village fairs and various folk occasions. Their content centers around farming seasons and folk ideas and stories. Interspersed with song and dances, these plays serve to entertain the common people. Moreover, there are some small commercial theatre enterprises which are private and present popular plays. The main stream theatre in today's Iran are the non-profit groups, their members being semi-professionals as they cannot earn a living from theatre, but they do theatre with professional skill and attitude. Today, our theatre is trying to bring about an aesthetical revolution via theatrical groups educated in Iranian colleges, and our theatre is going through a particularly fertile period in search of its national roots. Government grants are significant but theatrical productions have never had the support of the private segment. Iran is overcoming the economic depression and therefore is entering a new promising phase. Contacts with the outside world have grown considerably in the last three years. The government is responsible for all cultural matters in the realm of domestic and foreign policy, and international relations. Thus, the Ministry of Culture has commissioned Dramatic Arts Centre (DAC) to represent the performing arts on national and international level and to organize tours for Iranian groups. Important to understand in the function of DAC is that its role has not just been to be a theatrical producing organization but also a catalyst for theatrical development across the whole country. It is also responsible for developing guidelines for state financial and technical assistance. The development policy of DAC successfully remains the focal point of theatre production and the funding body for theatre development. Today, the theatrical landscape of Iran is characterized mainly by its public theatres, fully subsidized directly by the government and offers a wide range of drama including stage drama, puppet theatre and theatre for children and youth. Yet, most performances cannot pay for more than a fraction of production and operating costs. Festivals and theatre reviews have become important segments of theatre life in more recent times along with the emergence of permanent professional, semi-professional and numerous amateur theatre groups. The Dramatic Arts Centre has organized annual and biennial national and international theatre festivals such as The International Fajr Festival, held annually in Tehran with the participation of foreign and Iranian theatre companies. It is the most important theatre event taking place in our country and has contributed to the international exchange and the development of our national theatre movement. The festivals have eventually become one of the most important channels enhancing theatre life in our country. In an attempt to support the cause of theatre and artists, Theatre Forum (House of Theatre) has been formed as theatre artists' union. Equally important is the recent emergence of Radio Culture that plays a leading role in promoting theatrical art through radio. Although Iranian theatre still suffers from insufficient subsidy and space, it enjoys a sense of development. We need to strive for embodiment of true Iranian theatre aesthetics though the increase in the number of audience, performances, groups and spaces mark this development.
