The Finnish Theatre Information Centre is an organisation which represents the theatrical landscape of Finland and functions as the Finnish centre of the ITI. It is subsidised by the Ministry of Education.
The objectives of the centre are to promote Finnish theatre at home and abroad, to collect material on Finnish and foreign theatre for information purposes, to compile and publish Finnish theatre statistics and to make various publications and to establish and develop databases on Finnish theatre and drama. The centre promotes both the international exchange of knowledge and practice in the theatre arts and creative co-operations between theatre practitioners in Finland and abroad.
The centre functions as the Finnish centre of the Nordic Theatre Union. The theatre scenes of Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark are represented in the Nordic Theatre Union, its function being the strengthening of co-operations between Nordic theatres. Every second year the union organises a Nordic Theatre Meeting. Each national centre is responsible for chairing the meeting and providing secretarial work for 2 years in turn.
The centre is a member of the IETM and the Network of European Information Centres for Performing Arts. Visitors from abroad are welcome to its office where special care is taken of those who have an ITI card or have given advance notice of their arrival with a letter of introduction. The Centre gives information about repertoires and assists in booking tickets (in most cases an ITI card ensures reduced ticket prices). The centre also helps visitors to make contact with colleagues in Finland, visit drama schools and other theatre organisations. It sends information, articles, photos, and posters concerning Finnish theatre to individuals and institutions upon request.
The centre provides Finnish theatre practitioners and organisations with electronic Newsletters about foreign theatre events and distributes information on Finnish theatre activities to organisations and practitioners abroad.
The centre chooses theatre practitioners and organisations to participate in international festivals, meetings and training courses each year, and helps the chosen representatives by applying on their behalf to the Ministry of Education for travelling grants.

The Centre translates every year 1-4 new Finnish plays to foreign languages, mostly English. Copies and synopses of translations are available at the centre.
The Finnish Centre organises international theatre events, seminars, and festivals, such as the International Ballet Competitions in 1984, 1991, 1995, 2001, the Nordic Theatre Meeting and Festival in 1988, 1998 and 2008 the ITI World Congress, the International Festival and Workshop "Theatre as a Cultural Bridge" in 1989, The Annual Meeting of IETM 1999, the "MOBILE.HOME" Conference celebrating the "European Year of Workers`Mobility 2006" with IETM´s Annual Autumn Plenary Meeting 2006.
The Centre participates international projects like Transmission 1999-2005, exploring innovative ways of increasing job opportunities for actors and dancers, and Platform 2001-3 promoting new playwriting including workshops for translators. The Centre coordinated a project among five countries, ICDE - Information Centre for Drama in Europe. Its objective was to process up to date information on exchange and translation projects in the field of contemporary drama in Europe, and maintain it on a permanent basis. The organisers aimed at enhancing the circulation of contemporary European drama. The JANUS Project and The Fence Network were bringing together playwrights and cultural operators from over twenty different countries. The aim of the project was to promote the publicity and mobility of new drama within the countries of Europe. The organizers of the JANUS Project were Finnish Theatre Information Center, West Yorkshire Playhouse and WriterNet from UK, uniT from Austria and International Theatre Festival Varna Summer from Bulgaria. In 2005 the Centre organized together with director Mikko Viherjuuri, an exporting campaign for finnish theatre called Find a Fine Finnish Play on the west coast of the United States. In 2007 the second phase of the campagn was started. Lit Moon -theatre and -festival in Santa Barbara organized a week of finnish theatre in June 2007. It included the production of 2 finnish plays: The founding artistic director of the Lit Moon Theatre Company, John Blondell directed the play Queen K by Laura Ruohonen and Mikko Viherjuuri directed the play For Sheer Love of Me by Anna Krogerus. Also 2 other finnish modern plays were presented as staged readings. Mika Myllyaho's Panic and Sirkku Peltola's The Finnhorse. The second phase of FFFP will also include include a new choice of Finnish plays which Mr Viherjuuri will carry in his suitcase and present to several theatres in California.

Other Publications:
For Finnish theatre people the Centre publishes newsletters with information on international festivals, training courses, seminars, etc. The Centre publishes annually the Finnish Theatre Statistics, the Theatre Calendar, and the Finnish Theatre Directory. Amongst other publications Teatterit ja teatterintekijät 2005 (Who is Who in Finnish Theatre) and the Yearbook of Finnish Theatre and Dance 2006 "Theatre People - People´s Theatre" deserves mention.

The Finnish Theatre is by origin a people's theatre. Its roots are in village games, bear-hunting rites. Amateur theatre is still popular. There are hundreds of amateur groups, and especially in summer, they attract large audiences. The history of the Finnish professional theatre begins in 1872, when the Finnish National Theatre was founded. At present there are some sixty professional theatres subsidized with public funds, six of them Swedish-language. They gather more than three million spectators each year. For many years Finnish acting was based on the Stanislavsky method. Professor Wilho Ilmari developed this method while he was head of the Drama School from 1942 to 1963. Eino Kalima, for a long time the Director of the National Theatre, put the method into practice in his refined productions of Chekhov. Since the sixties the theatre has become more varied in its styles of expression. The Brechtian style was predominant for some time. The theatre became socially-minded, and young people formed independent groups (such as Ryhmäteatteri, KOM, Raatikko, Ahaa, Penniteatteri) as a challenge to the established theatre. The National Theatre, for example, maintained a traditional style both during the directorship of Arvi Kivimaa (1950-74) and under Kai Savola. Interesting foreign plays have anyhow been included in its extensive repertoire and in the late 80's the theatre produced interesting experimental plays on its three small stages. This trend has been successfully continued under the directorship of Ms. Maria-Liisa Nevala (1992-). Since the seventies Finnish theatre has been dominated by directors. The most ambitious artistic endeavors have aimed at creating an ensemble spirit. Pioneers in this field were the directors Ralf Långbacka and Kalle Holmberg, who made the Turku City Theatre the leading artistic theatre in the country from 1972 to 1977. Ralf Långbacka is famed especially for his productions of Chekhov, Brecht and Shakespeare, and also for major opera productions in Sweden and Finland. Kalle Holmberg's range has extended from large-scale opera productions (The King goes Forth to France) to dramatic works searching deeply into the human soul. A theatre personality with wide influence is Jouko Turkka, who both as a director, playwright and teacher has sought a more physical theatre expression, consistent with today's reality. The main theatre cities in Finland have traditionally been Helsinki, Turku and Tampere. The Helsinki City Theatre with its three stages has been successfully competing with the National Theatre for big audiences. Like the National theatre it was also under female direction - artistic director being Ms. Raija-Sinikka Rantala (1991-97). Since 1998 the theatre has been led by actor Asko Sarkola. Like all Finnish institutional theatres the City theatre is a repertory theatre. It has moreover an independent dance group mounting its own productions and assisting in the music productions. Tampere is always mentioned as a special town for theatre. Tampere with its 100.000 inhabitants maintains two big institutional theatres the TTT-Theatre of Tampere, which rose from the workers' theatre tradition, and the Tampere Theatre, with more bourgeois origins. Today they both have big houses with three stages each, and a high-level repertory. And most important - very large and faithful audiences. In the 70's and the 80's more than 10 modern theatres were built in the provinces. The new buildings, with many stages and modern facilities have attracted interesting directors and professionally high-level actors. For instance the City theatres in Lahti, Oulu, Jyväskylä and Kuopio have developed greatly during the eighties. Since the days of the national writer Aleksis Kivi, Finnish drama has been the foundation stone of the Finnish theatre. About 50 new Finnish dramas have their premieres each year. Classic playwrights include the woman writers Minna Canth, Maria Jotuni and Hella Wuolijoki. Among modern playwrights Veijo Meri, Paavo Haavikko, Eeva-Liisa Manner, Johan Bargum, Bengt Ahlfors, Jussi Kylätasku and Märta Tikkanen have won international reputation. In the 80s there arose a new generation of playwrights, many of them trained as dramaturges at the Theatre Academy, for example Pirkko Saisio, Jussi Parviainen, Raila Leppäkoski, Jukka Vieno, Harri Virtanen, Laura Ruohonen, Juha Siltanen, Michael Baran, Pasi Lampela, Juha Lehtola, Reko Lundan, Kristian Smeds and Esa Kirkkopelto. In 2006 there were altogether 51 Finnish language and 5 Swedish language professional theatres subject to the cultural funding bill for theatres in Finland. All of them are subsidized by State and municipal authorities. Revenues from tickets covered appr. 27% (ranging from 8 to 62%) of the total income of theatres. In 2006 altogether 19.500 performances were given to 3,78 million spectators in professional theatres, including drama, dance, and opera. These numbers cover also audiences for appr. 52 free theatre groups and 37 dance groups. |
