The main functions of the Estonian ITI Centre are to help develop international contacts between theatre praticians and theoreticians, to co-ordinate the activities of various professional organisations, and to participate in international ITI events.

Although there are references to Latin school drama in the late Middle Ages, and a professional German theatre functioned in Tallinn from 1809 onwards (Baltic Germans forming the upper slayer of the society ever since the country's subjugation by Teutonic crusaders in the 13th century), native Estonian theatre came into being in 1870 as part of a national awaking. It spread with amazing rapidity, giving rise to innumerable amateur groups in towns and villages. By 1906 the first professional troupes started working in Tallinn and the old university town Tartu, and the decade before World War I already saw some of the best Estonian plays, written by August Kitzberg and Eduard Vilde. The first period of political independence (1918-40) witnessed a branching out of professional theatre to all parts of the country, so that even towns of 5000 inhabitants had their regular companies. It also saw a gradual rise of artistic standards and an ever-growing proportion of original plays in the current repertoire. Although some of the smaller theatres were closed in the late 1940s, Estonia basically managed to retain its theatre network during the years of Soviet occupation (1940-91). Certain artistic liberties again became available after the harsh years of Stalinist terror, and the theatre often functioned as a channel of veiled opposition, thus securing a firm position in national consciousness' Estonia was also one of the few places in the then Soviet Union where the turbulent experimentation of the 1960s found a strong echo. The re-establishment of political independence in 1991 removed the last vestiges of Soviet censorship and ideological oppression. But it also robbed the theatre of its former function of indirect resistance, and the restructuring of economy brought about many hardships. For a couple of seasons the theatres seemed to be swamped by cheap commercialism, a desperate reaction to empty audience seats. Fortunately that crisis seems to be now subsiding, and we are again seeing interesting productions, some of which have also reaped laurels at international festivals. A new generation of actors and directors is certainly arriving with fresh visions of their own. At present there are 10 professional repertory state theatres in Estonia, 6 of them are situated in Tallinn. All receive state subsidies, which are supplemented by municipal support and special grants from a state-financed but independently-run Cultural Endowment (Kultuurkapital). Private or semi-private theatres have also emerged from 1990s, and there are numerous amateur groups. Contacts with the outside world have grown considerably in the last ten years. From 1996 Estonian theatre festival "DRAAMA" as a biannual festival has been held in Tartu. An alternative international theatre festival called "Baltoscandal" has occurred every other year since 1990. |
